Written by Isaac Watts in 1707, this song is based on Luke 14:7-11 and was originally subtitled, Divine Love Preparing a Feast, Calling in His Guests. At first glance you might think the title contains a typo, but at the time it was written, "aweful" meant "full of awe, or inspiring wonder or fear". The place with Christ within the doors—the church—is a place that is full of awe at the lavish feast of grace that God has provided for us that we simply do not deserve. Along with Watts, we long to see God's churches full of humble worshipers who have been redeemed by Christ's blood.
