The original title of Charles Wesley's most well-known Christmas hymn was "Hark! How All the Welkin Rings". "Welkin" is an old English word that means "the firmament of heaven". Don't worry, not many knew what it meant in 1739 either; that's why George Whitefield convinced him to change it. The original title meant to convey that the heavenly host was proclaiming the glory of the Lord so loudly that it was as if the very heavens themselves were shaking. This morning as we sing, let's raise our voices loudly and join in that heavenly chorus!
