Phosphorous

Growing evidence has emerged that cover crops may be able to improve phosphorus (P) cycling and contribute to the P nutrition of the subsequent crop. This could be particularly important in farming systems, with limited access to inputs and where low soil P availability has been identified. Field Study : Estimation of P derived from soil, mineral fertilizer and cover crops Cover crop residues were cut by scissors into pieces smaller than 0.5 cm to enable homogenous distribution in the pot. Depending on the P content in the residues, 5.7–14.8 g (DM) cover crop aboveground biomass was added to each plastic bag, corresponding to 50 mg total P kg soil−1. A) Low P Soil B) Moderate P Soil
