What is CHAMPS?
stands for Community Health Automated Medicaid Processing System. It’s Michigan’s official online system for managing Medicaid provider enrollment, patient eligibility, and fee-for-service claims. If you’re planning to see Michigan Medicaid patients, whether as an individual provider or as part of a group, this system is required. What CHAMPS Is Used For
CHAMPS is the go-to system for the state’s Medicaid program. Providers use it to:
Complete enrollment as a Type 1 (individual) or Type 2 (group) provider Update or maintain provider records and locations Confirm Medicaid patient eligibility and benefits Submit fee-for-service claims (if billing directly) Track claim status and payments Manage prior authorization requests Even if you're not handling billing yourself, CHAMPS enrollment is still required before Medicaid plans can credential or contract you.
Do All Michigan Medicaid Providers Need CHAMPS?
Yes, if you're planning to:
Bill Michigan Medicaid directly, or Join a managed Medicaid plan (like Meridian or Molina) that requires CHAMPS enrollment as part of their process Even providers who are not billing fee-for-service directly may be asked to enroll in CHAMPS to be recognized by the state system.
