According to research, here are some key statistics on dialysis patients in India:
- The current estimate is that India has over 200,000 dialysis patients as of 2022. However, estimating the total dialysis population is challenging.
- One older study from 2017 estimated about 152,000 patients receive dialysis in India each year. The number has definitely grown significantly since then.
- India's dialysis treatment rate is quite low even compared to other developing countries, at about 115 per million population. There is an acute shortage of dialysis centers and nephrologists in India.
- It's estimated only 30-40% of Indians with end-stage kidney failure who require dialysis or a kidney transplant actually receive any form of renal replacement therapy. The rest do not have access due to socioeconomic factors.
- Most dialysis patients resort to receiving dialysis just 1-2 times per week, not the recommended 3 sessions, due to high costs $500-1000 USD per month. This contributes to very poor survival outcomes.
- The vast majority (95%) are on hemodialysis, with peritoneal dialysis still relatively uncommon. The demand for dialysis is projected to keep rising with increasing diabetes, HBP prevalence.
