Unit One FAQs

How can we begin empathy mapping if we haven't done any user research?
At this stage, we haven’t performed any research ourselves so we will be making assumptions. Assumptions are great for quickly getting started but always need to be validated later on. This is the quickest way to get started as user testing and/or interviews can be a lengthy process to complete. Assumptions also have a better chance of being effective if you have a base understanding of the user, as instructor Devin mentioned in the Design Thinking course. Assumptions can also be formed using data or feedback provided for similar or competitor solutions. (customer review sites, marketplaces reviews, etc.)
Unvalidated assumptions can certainly be dangerous to the design and overall user experience. With that said assumptions are a nice way to get started quickly but should be validated with real users as soon as possible, and we do go over researching methods such as user interviews and user testing in other courses as well.
Can't assumptions be affected by cognitive bias?
Yes, this is absolutely true and why it is imperative that we validate our assumptions by collecting user data as soon as possible!
