Join the Spring Advocacy Campaign!
Participate in our Day of Action on February 1, 2024. Children are being sexually exploited and abused online at alarming rates. The U.S. hosts more child sexual abuse content online than any other country in the world. It is also where most of the major technology companies are based. It is our responsibility as a nation to do what we can to end this heinous crime and #ProtectKidsOnline. We are calling on Congress to pass legislation that will require certain online safety standards for children using the platforms.
Our goal is to mobilize our campuses to contact Sen. Schumer’s office and urge him to bring the EARN IT Act to the floor for a vote. As the Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Schumer has influence over which bills are brought before the full chamber for a vote.
Actions will be taken one day following the Senate Judiciary Hearing with CEOs of Meta, TikTok, X (Twitter), Snap and Discord – Feb. 1, 2024. The hearing will focus on this issue and therefore is a timely moment to flood Sen. Schumer’s phone lines with this request.
Why advocate?
Advocacy is about ordinary people coming together and taking action to shift the balance of power toward justice.
Change happens when we demand it.
The role of advocacy
Advocacy has played a crucial role in the movement to end slavery. The great abolitionist movement of the nineteenth century began with just twelve men who, from the start, faced many obstacles to their campaign to make slavery illegal. Not the least of these was a citizenry that did not recognize slavery as wrong, and a nation that benefited richly from the trade in human beings. Careful organizing and persistence paid off, however, and eventually, they succeeded in outlawing the Transatlantic Slave Trade in Great Britain.
Working with big institutions like a national government means that change takes a long time. In moments of frustration and doubt, it is important to recall those who have gone before us and proven that victory is possible, even in the face of great injustice.
Though each of us may not have much influence on our own, by joining our voices together, we can bring an end to modern-day slavery, once and for all. Today, slavery is widely recognized as an abomination and is illegal in every country on earth. What we need now are tougher laws, the political will, and resources to enforce them—and an educated and mobilized constituency that will hold political leaders accountable.
