Whenever I go to a new (sufficiently big) city, I like to try to reach out to people in the Effective Altruism and Rationalist communities, and start my own local group if there isn’t any — it’s been a great way for me to connect with like-minded people. I initially did that for a few years in Montreal / Quebec — where I’m from. Doing this in Mérida, I came across Silvia, who’s working on building the EA group in Yucatan (the province of Mérida).
Carissa and I met Silvia for breakfast yesterday morning. Silvia is really impressive — zir curriculum is longer than I can remember, but I remember ze taught digital economics and discrete mathematics at university. Their EA group is recent (since November 2021) — they are 6, and all knew each other from their involvement in traditional approaches to altruism before learning about the Effective Altruism community, and now they are learning about EA together and are aiming to build a group here. I love it ☺
