Exercise Title: "Charting the Course to Scalability and Growth"

Objective:
This exercise aims to familiarize students with the concept of scalability in the context of a lean startup, the factors that contribute to successful scalability, and various growth strategies. Students will apply this knowledge in a practical exercise that involves planning for the growth of a lean startup.
Duration: 2 hours
Materials Needed:
Laptop/Computer with Internet access for research
Projector for presentation
Whiteboard or Flipchart for brainstorming
Pens and Notepads for taking notes
Procedure:
Introduction to Scalability (30 minutes)
Start the session by explaining what scalability is, especially in the context of a lean startup. Discuss the difference between growth and scalability. Highlight the key factors that contribute to successful scalability, such as effective resource management, operational efficiency, and the ability to increase revenue with minimal cost increments.
Understanding Growth Strategies (30 minutes)
Explain different types of growth strategies such as market penetration, market development, product development, and diversification. Discuss the merits and challenges of each strategy with examples.
Case Study Analysis: Scalability and Growth (30 minutes)
Present case studies of companies that have successfully scaled and grown their businesses. Highlight the strategies they used, challenges they faced, and how they overcame these challenges.
Group Exercise: Planning for Growth (40 minutes)
Divide students into groups and assign each group a different lean startup scenario. Task each group to come up with a scalability and growth plan for their startup. They should consider the scalability factors and choose the most appropriate growth strategy. Each group will present their plan to the class.
Wrap-up and Debrief (10 minutes)
Summarise the key learning points from the session. Reinforce the importance of strategic planning for scalability and growth in a lean startup.
Outcomes:
Students will gain a clear understanding of the concept of scalability and the key success factors.
They will learn about different growth strategies and their implications.
Through the group exercise, they will gain practical experience in planning for the scalability and growth of a lean startup.
