Duration: 2 hours
Materials Needed:
Laptop/Computer with internet access for research
Projector or large screen for presentation and viewing videos
Whiteboard or Flipchart for brainstorming
Pens and Notepads for taking notes
Procedure:
Introduction and Discussion: Types of Funding (30 minutes)
Begin by explaining different types of funding available to startups - Bootstrapping, Friends and Family, Angel Investors, Venture Capital, Crowdfunding etc. Discuss the pros and cons of each type and under what circumstances each might be appropriate.
Case Study Analysis: Attracting Investors (30 minutes)
Present case studies of successful startups that attracted significant investment. Have students identify and discuss the strategies these companies used to attract their investors. Also discuss some cases where startups failed to attract investors and discuss the reasons behind these failures.
Role Play Exercise: Investor Meetings (50 minutes)
Divide students into pairs and assign them roles - one as the startup founder and the other as potential investor. Provide each 'founder' with a brief of their startup and their funding needs. Founders prepare a pitch for their 'investor', then they meet, pitch, and negotiate.
Debrief and Discussion (20 minutes)
After the role-play exercise, have a discussion and debrief. Ask 'investors' what they liked about the pitches and what could have been better. Discuss how to handle objections and tough questions from investors. Also, discuss the importance of body language and communication skills.
Wrap-up (10 minutes)
Summarise the key learning points from the session. Emphasize the importance of understanding the types of funding, creating a compelling story to attract investors, and the need for adequate preparation before meeting with potential investors.
Outcomes:
Students will understand the different types of funding available for startups and when each is appropriate.
They will learn how to make their startup attractive to investors.
They will gain practical experience in preparing for and handling meetings with investors.
