Had an incendiary meeting today with a founder whose team has built a sync licensing MVP. We where introduced by a mutaul aquatance Now, I've met some fruity characters in tech but this was on another level.

Firstly, their team has built a 'platform for everything' - i.e only works if the production companies, commissioning distributors, and rights holders are all on board. That is a massive barrier to selling this product, IMO.

Secondly, they built using WordPress. And I get it - speed of development - but distributors have to defend their networks against state-sponsored hackers. Sure, they can give you a security spec, and pay you handsomely to implement it.. but a WordPress prototype site isn't going to pass the 'smell test' - i.e does this team have the competence to do this?

Thirdly, there trying to raise money from the wrong people. Their sync licensing 'infrastructure' which, to reiterate, is a WordPress site, isn't a billion-dollar business. They are knocking on angels, seeders, private equity, and venture capital. They should be trying to raise from family trusts, competitors, the rights holders themselves.
Sync tech falls into the 'copyright-grey-zone' - where nobody two parties can quite agree on how to fuck you- for want of a better turn of phrase - you adding value, kind of - especially if you have a customer that's a rights holder. It really does attract some strange people.
