Substitute

Can you replace a part of an existing concept to see whether it will result in improvements?

Examples:

Combine

Combine two different products into a single product

Example:

Camera + Phone = Smart Phone

Adapt

Take an existing solution to a different problem and adapt it to solve the current problem

Example:

Netflix changing from DVD to streaming

Modify

Modify an aspect of the situation / problem to see if you get any new insights or adds value

Example:

Exaggerate product-line. See whether it makes sense to only sell a single product.

Put to another use

Similar to “adapt”, except taking an existing idea or concept and putting it to another use i.e. using it differently than it was originally intended

Example:

Using ocean waste to create sandals

Eliminate

Eliminating waste of inefficient processes with the goal of streamlining them

Example:

Removing the CD/DVD drive from modern day electronics e.g. apple macbook

Reverse

Reverse the orientation or direction of a process or a product - try and see it from a different perspective

Example:

Instead of making decisions top-down, perhaps try making decisions bottom-up
