Meeting notes

Ciara 02/11/2023

Changes to experience this week (see video: )
Trimmed narrator voiceover down (see for written version), now using AI voice which is not as good as YouTube narrator but gives an indication for the moment. So will need to record this with a real person when narrative is more fixed
Added some environment background sounds and visuals (don’t come out as well in video as real experience), idea is placing the user in a liminal outdoor space that expresses the scene design “You are trapped in a world of never-ending cycles. Frustrating and exhausting.” (more on scene design: )
Added rain visual effects and sound on athlete story 7. I tried to cut out the music from the YouTube clip and make it louder which has reduced the audio quality of that clip. If the versions without music aren’t available I will need to re-record athlete story audio clips.
Known issues
The spikey ball animation is broken in the video, it should start blue and turn to red
The dumbbell animation is unfinished, lots of tiny dumbbells should rain from the sky and knock the big one out of your hand
The vest doesn’t work well as a flat object you pick up. I experimented with modelling it as cloth which was quite cool () but its not working on the VR headset currently
Final athlete story is missing a medal on the ground that you pick up
Have just under 4 weeks left, quite a lot to do but I feel it is going a lot better now I have focus on what the experience should be like. Looking likely I will just deliver the Merry-Go-Round scene with an intro and outro.
Got feedback on Monday from students and tutors, generally positive for this stage in the project.
Certain animations (cracked shoe, spikey massage ball) people really liked.
Users needed an intro on what the experience was about/narrative concepts, and a tutorial on how picking up objects works to progress the story
Users weren’t guided to the objects position and sometimes missed it
Users needed more time to play with the objects and the athlete stories went by too quickly for them (their attention is stretched over more things in VR)
The interaction of picking up the object needs refining to make it clearer you are “holding” the athlete story (have an idea for this)
Questions
Did you have any luck getting hold of the athlete story audio from the old Slack workspace?
I think I need to change name of project as working title of “The Resilience Narrative” doesn’t make sense as that is the name of one of the narratives? However the names of the narratives are more powerful/intriguing than anything else I’ve come up with so far which are pretty route-one/does what it says in the tin, e.g. “Storying Running Injury Experiences in VR”
Is there a good date to user test in London? I think anytime from next week would be useful for the project

Feedback

Disjointed between athlete stories and connection across the sections not clear
Reference athletes stories as a thing
3 stages is important to get across, comparison, never ending cycle
Rainfall, storm spiral out of control
Track or windy road of where people are in the 3 stages
Reinforce those stages through the journey e.g. as you enter stage
