Summary / intro
trapped in a never-ending cycle of injury and rehabilitation
injuries continually affected athletes well-being and sporting careers
three phases: what could be, what should be and what could have been
Emotions
: exhaustion, tired, hard, frustration
What could be
trapped in a revolving door of uplift and injury
led to comparison with other athletes and ‘What should be?’
Emotions
: disappointment, frustration, sadness
What should be
consumed by performance objectives, athletes cheat rehab to pursue a sporting goal
decline in athlete’s body self relationship and anxiety over an unpredictable / uncontrollable body
lack of empathy from peers and coaches increase feelings of low self-worth and isolation
resigned to being “the injured athlete” with a “body that has let them down” they feel powerless to effect change
more lows than highs; athletes are left questioning their purpose in the sport
Emotions
:
anxiety, exhausted / burnt out, powerless, mentally ill
What could have been
No longer able to see a future in the sport, athletes become nostalgic about their past
Feelings of unfulfilled potential, robbed or cheated of an athletic career
Trapped by the actions of the past, constantly pondering about what could have been
Emotions
:
loss/grief, confusion, bitterness(?)
