Materials

Ask students to review the following reading assignments:
This reading assignment includes a detailed list of all of the features provided by the app, as well as brief definitions of each.
: To be digitally literate you need to be able to navigate, evaluate and create using all forms of digital technologies. This article includes a video that defines digital literacy concepts.
This article dives into today’s tech and explain how it’s helping and hindering the online experience for people living with sensory disabilities.

Lesson Introduction

To prepare students for this lesson, ask them to read the articles above before class. Then, introduce this lesson in class with a brief teacher-led presentation focused on any or all of the following topics:
Why it is important for students to develop digital literacy skills
The pros and cons of integrating technology in daily life for independent living
The main challenges individuals who are blind or visually impaired face when trying to travel independently indoors and outdoors

Main Activity: Discussion & Ideation

To ensure students fully understand the features and terms embedded in the GoodMaps Experience, prompt them to consider and discuss the following:
Are there any features or terms provided in the readings that are confusing or difficult to understand?
Are there any features that are missing from GoodMaps? If so, how do they imagine the proposed features will work?

Assessment, Reflection & Self Evaluations

Quiz students verbally on GoodMaps features and terms, asking them to articulate, in their own words, what each one means. Consider providing small prizes (tootsie rolls, pencils, etc.) for each correct answer.
