Smartphone Accessibility Features

BEGINNER: This lesson is best for students with no GoodMaps experience and those with less experience using assistive technology.

Objectives

After this lesson, students will be able to:
Understand the various accessibility features offered by Apple and/or Android devices
Articulate the purpose for each individual accessibility feature
Activate and use accessibility features effectively
Understand how the GoodMaps app uses a smartphone's built-in accessibility features

Materials

Two core reading materials are linked to below that provide a basic overview of iPhone and Android phone accessibility features to support vision, physical and motor, hearing, and learning needs:

Lesson Introduction

To prepare students for this lesson, ask them to review the reading associated with the type of phone they use. At the start of class, discuss the main features offered for blind and low-vision users, and discuss the similarities and differences between iPhone and Android feature design.

Main Activity: Discussion & Practice

To assess or review students' prior knowledge, offer the following prompts for discussion:
What accessibility features do you use most often?
How proficient are you with the different features, especially screen reader/talkback, voice dictation, braille display, etc.?
What is most challenging about using accessibility features?
Ask students to practice using accessibility features either in the classroom or around the school. ​Note: Teachers will need to tailor this lesson to individual students' skill level/grade.

Assessment, Reflection & Self Evaluations

Observe students using the screen reader/talkback on their phones. Evaluate their level of acumen, and ask them to reflect on ways they can improve.
