Post-Everesting Update!

May 21, 2021
Dear Family & Friends,
On Thursday, I attempted to “Everest” on Lookout Mountain as planned. I ended up abandoning at two-thirds of the way to the "summit”, finishing at 133 miles and 18,300 feet climbed. Ultimately, a combination of overheating, not eating enough, and fatigued legs brought the day to an end after 12 hours of riding.
The ride is recorded on Strava here:
While I failed to reach the summit, the day was a success. It was an incredible challenge and I had the company of the several friends who rode alongside me and provided supplies. And I learned several lessons about planning and nutrition that I hope will make next time more successful. [1] And there will be a next time.
It was also an overwhelming success because together we donated 14 bikes to World Bicycle Relief! Thank you all so much for your generous support of this challenge and this cause. Your gift will directly change lives around the world through the power of a bicycle.
Attached are some photos from the day. Photo credits to Casey, who not only delivered fresh water bottles mid-ride and captured some stellar shots, but also climbed 11,500 feet on a heavier gravel bike.
I also captured riding the descent on my GoPro - here’s a short montage of some favorite sections: .
Thanks again for your encouragement and fundraising efforts. If you want to learn more, see more photos, or just pedal around DC, please reach out anytime.
