Navigating a Path to New Music Discovery

Do you love music but find yourself mostly listening to your old favorite bands and performers?
This article explores the landscape of modern music discovery. If you're like me and our team at One Foot Productions, you're always on the hunt for that next great band. But where do you start? Growing up as part of the Gen X generation, I was tethered to albums by iconic bands like U2, Yes, Rush, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, Madonna, and Tracy Chapman—playing them on repeat. I discovered new music through radio, friends, magazines, MTV, or trips to the record store.
Today, the music industry is drastically different. There's an overwhelming array of music at our fingertips, yet the mainstream channels still heavily favor top tracks, often sidelining full albums that offer a complete artistic journey. We're missing out on these profound musical experiences!
Carlos Santana talks about how music can embody our emotions and consume us. One of the best ways to experience music is through live performances. At large festivals, amidst the chaos of stages and tents, you'll find posters listing many unfamiliar names. It takes effort to research these artists and decide if their music resonates with you. Tools like Spotify and Apple Music make it easier to explore, although sifting through the tracks can be a daunting task.
Despite discovering a song or two that you like, it's hard to gauge whether a band can offer a dynamic, encompassing experience—a journey through emotions, whether it be joy, sorrow, anger, excitement, or celebration. I was moved by a recent interview where Brené Brown discussed how U2's album "War" was the only cassette she brought on a hitchhiking trip through Europe, citing its ability to accommodate all her emotions.
How do you navigate through this vast musical landscape? While Spotify recommendations are often spot-on, they might not always encourage you to venture beyond your musical comfort zone.
At One Foot Productions, we are redefining music discovery through our intimate (750-1,500 people), nature-based festivals ( and ). Kevin Merritt, co-producer, believes that true discovery comes from experience—not just listening to snippets of tracks but immersing in the live ambiance. "The way we used to absorb albums by playing them repeatedly is lost today. Now, we often skim through songs without fully engaging. Our live events are curated to ensure every band you see is one we've experienced and believe in," he explains.
We aim to expose our audience to a broad spectrum of high-quality performances. Most likely, you won't recognize the bands at our events, but you might just leave with several new favorites. In addition to our festivals, we host Tuesday Night Music Club every first Tuesday of the month from 7:00 to 7:45 PM PST. This virtual event brings our community together to review and discuss four performers, offering everyone a chance to listen, learn, and share their thoughts.
As Kevin So in Brighter Day shares, “The finest drug is made of music.”
Join us, discover new music, and share your experiences. Perhaps you’ll find your next favorite band with us. If you have other suggestions for music discovery, please share.
