An Australian mining company GME (Greenland Minerals and Energy) is trying to press ahead with open-pit uranium mine in southern Greenland.
Kvanefjeld Plateau (the site of a mineral deposit) ー 5 miles outside Narsaq (city in Greenland) holds a billion tons of resources according to Greenland Minerals Ltd ー the industry will need to win local support and overcome concerns about the environment. The coastal towns of the Narsaq and Inuit campaigners are driving the resistance to the project.
The company plans to dump radioactive material in the nearby natural basin ー they promise a layer which will prevent the leaking. But toxins would be left behind in the mine. Ionising radiation is poisonous and responsible for cancerous and non-cancerous diseases even at low levels. This would lead to disastroug health issues for the Inuit peoples.
