The Rogun Hydroelectric Dam on the Vakhsh River in southern Tajikistan is still under construction and is set to be the world's largest and tallest dam. It is being constructed to help Tajikistan (which suffers from energy shortages after exploitation by the USSR) meet its energy needs while generating economic revenue. Construction has been delayed by the collapse of the Soviet Union and has exacerbated tensions between the Tajikistani government and Uzbekistan: a reservoir could potentially dry up downstream water sources, posing risks to Uzbekistani cotton fields and farmers that depend on the Amu Darya river for irrigation. The dam’s construction was temporarily suspended by the World Bank due to the controversy. There are also major concerns regarding the resettlement of 42,000 people set to be displaced by the project. Although this will be a source of renewable energy, environmental risks include waste from blasting for stone, potential draining of groundwater resources, and disruption of river ecosystems.
