Indigenous peoples in these regions are facing loss of land which puts their cultures and way of life at risk - traditional land and territories at risk too.
Relation to the climate crisis
The IPCC said that rising sea levels will specifically impact the Pacific region. Many territories are already under threat from rising sea levels.
Soil erosion, destructive wave activity, frequent storm surges, landslides ー the impacts are already being experienced in Marshall Islands, Cook Islands, Tuvalu and low-lying islands in Papua New Guinea with high tides and stormy seas.
Flooding and other climate variations are causing plantations and livestock of many indigenous groups to become vulnerable to diseases.
