Background info

Nearly a third of the attacks in Mexico since 2012 targeted defenders who opposed power projects, primarily wind and hydropower.

In 2017, Isidro Baldenegro López was shot to death for defending the land, he received the Goldman environmental award years earlier.

Along with Brazil, Colombia, Honduras and Guatemala, Mexico is one of the most dangerous places to defend environmental, land and human rights.
