In 2018 a hydroelectric dam (Xepian-Xe Nam Noy hydro power dam) collapsed in southern Laos - it destroyed thousands of homes and killed several people. Heavy rainfall and flooding linked to climate change caused it to collapse. The energy source has faced backlash from climate activists.
Reports have suggested that fish stocks coils fall by up to 40% as a result of the projects.
There is inadequacy of warning systems for the dam construction and operations - the warning was very late and this cost lives.
Laos is trying to become the “battery of Asia” and this project was part of that plan:
11 large hydro-power dams on the main Mekong river are planned - they want to export 90% of the energy produced to Thailand.
