Kazakhstan

Background info

Kazakhstan possesses 3% of global oil reserves, and its economy is largely reliant on oil and the mining industry. As a result, 20 billion tons of industrial waste have accumulated on Kazakhstani territory. A report from Friends of the Earth Europe has found that many companies are failing to comply with environmental regulations, and there is a lack of transparency around oil extraction operations; children have been diagnosed with health conditions linked to toxic gas emissions from oil fields. Having been a large part of the USSR nuclear complex, the area around Kazakhstan’s Semipalatinsk Test Site still has elevated radiation levels. Despite 30 years of remediation efforts, much public health information remains classified.
