Flint Water Crisis

Since 2014, there has been a lead poisoning water crisis in Michigan, USA. Since the budgets were cut for water and the pipelines were old, the government decided to reallocate their drinking water assets from their original public, water utility towards Flint River. Yet the water in Flint River contained several contaminants, a bacteria that would lead to lifelong disease, and dangerously high levels.
This lead to years of environmental racism, health problems, which continues today as both a health and water crisis. The Flint city population is mostly of POC, showing environmental racism by Rick Snyder (former governor).Flint residents continue to struggle day by day to get clean water, with most surviving by water bottle donations. Although the Supreme Court has officially allowed the Flint residents to sue back in January, we still need to move forward to make sure Flint residents are compensated for their suffering from disease, lack of resources, etc.
We must urge the EPA to take action and charge Former Governor of Michigan Rick Snyder, along with insuring national support for Flint resources. Join our actions now!

Background Information

The disease came from a bacteria from the government’s bad mistakes. This occurred because the government wanted to cut down the budget in water utility. Therefore, they decided to change their water source to the local Flint River because it had more water.
In order to quickly cleanse it, they decided to put chlorine in the river to remove contaminants. Yet the organic material along with the chlorine compiined together and broke down the old lead pipes. This released both an extremely deadly bacteria and dangerously high levels of lead into the water.
According to the EPA, the current threshold for lead in water is 10-15 ppb for drinking water. The Flint Water had dangerously high levels of lead. Yet for years, the EPA has declined to investigate the Flint Water crisis.
Even though the government will stop using water from Flint starting in July, the water has infiltrated throughout. Even if the water becomes cleansed, the bacteria remains, which is why this is a continuing problem.
