On the 7th April the NBWL’s Standing Committee had a meeting to discuss the proposal for 98.59 hectares of land to be used for a coal mining project. This land would have been from the Saleki proposed reserve. This is an elephant reserve that includes the Dehing patkai Wildlife Sanctuary covering 111.19 sq km of rainforest. Coal mining is one of the most environmentally damaging human activities - it pollutes air, pollutes rivers and pollutes land. This destroys things as important as fresh water systems. This is a step backwards in all the steps the world is making to be greener and the loss it will cause is irreplaceable.
