The Defenders of the Earth are important people for the resistance and collective fight using mechanisms of citizen participation proposing solutions to conflicts, even so they are victims of strong threats by armed groups that in the worst case ends in deaths.
In 2010, the pre-feasibility studies of the so-called "La Colosa" mine began, by the multinational Anglo Gold Ashanti. However, the inhabitants of Cajamarca show their concern and discontent for the development of extractive activities that can significantly affect territorial sustainability and jeopardize the balance of ecosystems and the availability of water, since the project is located in an area of ecological importance as the "Central Forest Reserve of Tolima".
The current pandemic makes land and human rights defenders the target of violence, as the media's attention is focused on the socio-economic effects of the virus, but not on the protection of communities that have been forgotten and violated by the Government: Since the start of the pandemic, 32 social leaders have died, 19 of them since confinement measures were imposed across the country on March 23.
