The chat
On 24th June 2025 we had the pleasure of talking to Angi Malderez, author of Mentoring Teachers: Supporting Learning, Wellbeing and Retention - see her full book in Around 20 teachers took part in the event - here are a couple of photos of the participants who were still in the room when we thought to photo document the event:

We are delighted to invite all teachers and teacher educators interested in understanding and supporting teacher learning to the online premiere of the documentary On Mentoring: Warmth, not Heat Tuesday, 9th December 2025 at 2pm GMT / 3pm CET!
The documentary was filmed as part of ELTAM MK‘s project Consolidating and Scaling up Macedonian Mentoring Network (MMN) funded by A. S. Hornby Educational Trust. Please register for the event at the Event Link—we will share a link to the stream a couple of days before the screening.
MMN use Angi Malderez’s mentoring protocol called Systematic Informed Reflective Practice (SIRP, Malderez, 2024) to support teachers making sense of their classroom experiences in a safe, non-judgemental manner. SIRP breaks down post-lesson reflection into five distinct steps:
1. What happened?
2. How can I understand this?
3. What else do I know?
4. Most likely explanation?
5. So, what now?
In the summer of 2025 Angi privately visited North Macedonia. MMN thought this was a fantastic opportunity to meet Angi and chat about their experiences of using SIRP. Angi kindly agreed to talk to the group, whose development she had followed and supported from the very start.
In the documentary Angi talks about the origins of SIRP, how teachers learn, how teacher noticing can be supported, the ‘learned helplessness’ that mentor comments can develop, the empowerment from arriving at one’s own informed decisions, the value of sticking at it even when development is hard and requires time, and the importance for teachers to keep tinkering.
Many thanks for @Suteren for the hard work, grace and avant-garde style they brought to this project.
Audience response
"What splendidly articulate and aware people some of [the] mentors are... Enjoyed being reminded of what it’s all about... And so glad that the Hornby Trust has been able to contribute to something so useful." - Martin Wedell, A. S. Hornby Educational Trust [...] The film is pure perfection looking from different perspectives. Angi should be a role model for us all with all her zest, positive power and [support for] teachers. Thank you for introducing her to us. - Marija A. Popovska, EL teacher and MMN mentor
