Reduce driver distractions and ensure the safety of employees, passengers, other motorists, and pedestrians.
Comply with state and federal laws.
Minimize operational and financial risks.
Uphold the company’s reputation.
Application
This policy applies to all Canology LLC employees.
Definition
Distracted driving refers to any activity that diverts a driver’s attention away from driving, which can reduce cognitive awareness, impair decision-making, or negatively affect performance, increasing the risk of errors, near-crashes, or accidents.
Prohibited Activities
Employees are prohibited from engaging in the following while driving:
Using a hand-operated cellphone.
Operating a computer, laptop, text messaging device, or GPS tools.
Reading (e.g., books, newspapers).
Personal grooming.
Restricted Activities
The following activities may be permitted, provided they do not impair the driver’s focus. Certain driving conditions (e.g., a school zone at 3:05 p.m. versus an open highway at 10:00 a.m.) may be more or less conducive to performing these activities safely:
Conversing with passengers.
Adjusting the radio, MP3 player, or CD player.
Adjusting vehicle climate controls or other accessories.
Eating or drinking.
Enforcement
Violations of this policy will be treated seriously and may result in disciplinary action. Additionally, violating California’s distracted driving laws can lead to fines, points on your driver’s license, and may affect your employment eligibility.
