Goal: Set aside assumptions and gather real insights about the user's needs, barriers, and motivations.
Activities: User interviews, shadowing/observation, diary studies, and empathy mapping.
Outcome: A deep, unpolished understanding of the user's reality.
User journeys
their environment
Prioritise pain points
Formulate a problem statement/HMW statement
Ideate
Initial Goal: Quantity over quality initially. Push past the obvious "first ideas."
Activities: Brainstorming, Crazy 8s, SCAMPER, Worst Possible Idea, and sketching.
Outcome: A prioritized list of ideas to move forward with.
Define design goals- hypothesis
What [Feature, change, experience..] → for Who [user persona] → achieve this Outcome [Goal] → Validate with Feedback [market feedback, KPIs. Ctrs, Qualitative and Quantitative insights(surveys, reviews etc)
Build- Prototype, MVPs
Goal: Create something tangible enough to test, without spending unnecessary time or resources on fidelity.
Activities: Paper prototypes, wireframes, mockups, or even role-playing services.
Outcome: An artifact (digital or physical) that can be tested.
Validate
Goal: Validate assumptions and learn what fails. "Failure" here is a success because it saves engineering time later.
Activities: Usability testing, A/B testing, and feedback sessions. interviews
Outcome: validated insights that either greenlight development or send you back to a previous stage (often Define or Ideate).
Rollout, test, and repeat
Activities: 10,20,30 -100% rollout, Google Analytics, Hot Jar....
