Path I would recommend for self-learning to anyone starting:
1) Study all vocabulary untill HSK4 or the Refold deck (it’s 1000 words instead of 1200). It’s though but believe me, it will pay off and will help you understand more things in future. It’s the basic foundation you need for better content. At this stage you can get used to listening and reading a bit, but don’t overdo it unless you feel you can understand a high %. I only recommend to view Comprehensible Input Chinese Stories by Bumpy Chinese (Beginner level). Please avoid apps like Duolingo or HelloChinese, those seem useful at the start, but ordering words is not learning and only stay free until HSK2-HSK3 (it’s kind of a timesink or cashgrab for people that only wants to stay in beginner levels).
2) With the basic foundation in place and with a % of mature words, I recommend to start immersion with some TV shows, podcasts and graded readers. Choose the content according to your preference and between 50-80% of words you can understand. If you want to practice grammar for more complex cases you can check Chinese Grammar Wiki.
3) While studying HSK5 - HSK6 vocabulary, don’t focus only on academic way if you want to be fluent. Add vocabulary, sentences that Chinese people would say also, just be careful about dialects or words that are not from modern times. You can create a list based on videos or audios.
Anki study with sentence mining
1) Write only 1 sentence in each card. Leave a blank space for the words I’m trying to learn.
2) Add more sentences for the words that are difficult to me. For nouns also add an image as it’s difficult to guess nouns without context.
3) Read out loud each card when studying to improve muscle memory and practice speaking.
4) Think and speak new sentences using different words to practice the sentence structure.
5) Apply the sentences in real conversations. Get feedback. If there are corrections, ALWAYS add back the correction to study.
