Static Stations

In this activity, you will explore static electricity at four stations and report on your observations.

Procedure

With your group, explore each station for a few minutes.

Bring two things with you

Your balloon
Your laptop so you can enter your observations .

In all of your answers, use the following terms:

negatively charged
positively charged
electrons

Stations

Blow up and tie your balloon.
Vigorously rub your balloon on your hair
Visit each station to see how your balloon causes the materials.
Station #1
Hold your balloon near a person’s hair without touching their head. Try holding different sides of the balloon.
Does it work the same on every side of the balloon?Why or why not?
Does it work the same on everyone’s hair? Why or why not?

Station #2
Hold your balloon so that it makes a compost bag float.
How long can you make the bag hover?
Why is the bag floating?

Station #3
Make an aluminum can roll all the way across a table with your balloon. DO NOT TOUCH the can with your balloon.
Why is the can moving? How fast can you cross the table?

Station #4
Hold your balloon above the plate of salt and pepper. Without touching the salt and pepper, see how much of it you can pick up.
Which material is attracted to the balloon more?
Why is the material sticking to the balloon?
