My Judging Paradigm

- I am a parent judge and this is my first year judging.
- I was a Policy debater in high school (over two decades ago!).
- I am familiar with major debate terms and structures, but some of my terminology may be dated. Moreover, I believe that debate terminology should be used to guide ideas but not communication -- so be sure to explain any terms you use and be clear on why you believe it should shift voting your way.
- I can and will flow but please don't rely on that, and be sure to make a clear articulation of arguments, what they are in response to, what is being actively or unintentionally dropped, etc.
- Please time yourselves and track the rules for each other. Be gracious and give the benefit of the doubt on procedure - we're focused on the content, not the mechanics.
- While I appreciate the pressure for speed at times, please make sure you are understandable for both me and your opponents. When in doubt, slow down and make less points, but more clearly.
- I think debate teaches very important critical thinking and communication skills that will be valuable for your entire life - in both personal and work environments. I'm excited to be part of your journey in honing these life skills.
- Don't forget to be humble, gracious, collegial, and to smile a bit -- let's have fun!
