A barista is a trained professional who specializes in preparing and serving coffee, specifically espresso-based drinks. They typically work in coffee shops, cafes, and other similar establishments. Baristas are responsible for operating the espresso machine, grinding the coffee beans, and preparing a variety of drinks such as cappuccinos, lattes, and Americanos.

A barista must have a strong understanding of coffee beans, brewing methods, and the equipment used to make coffee. They are also responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their equipment and their work area, as well as providing excellent customer service.
Baristas are also expected to have a good memory, attention to detail and be able to work well under pressure. As the role requires interaction with customers, good communication skills and a friendly personality are also important. Additionally, many baristas are also responsible for making various types of teas, hot chocolate and other non-coffee beverages.
Some baristas may also be trained in latte art, which is the technique of creating designs on the surface of the milk in a latte using the espresso and milk, making the drinks more visually appealing.
