Reciprocity’s Social Safety Net
How people who have very little take care of each other, a kind of social safety net woven from threads of reciprocity. Aquanetta calls it “the Black tax.” Tithing in Christian Churches and Judaism may be related. Barn raising, quilting bees, husking bees in the American pioneer experience. Even bridal showers and baby showers today. Remittances across borders from immigrants to family back home, too. Extended family loan funds in Asian Indian communities in the US to help fund motels without relying on banks. To me these are the heart of Caritas. Charity as love circulating within a closed community.
