Myanmar Garment Industry Monitoring Mechanism (MGIMM)
About MGIMM
1. What is MGIMM?
Myanmar Garment Industry Monitoring Mechanism (MGIMM) is an online tool for tracking Myanmar garment factories' social and labour rights-related performance at the factory level. It is funded by the European Union and developed by Yever, a certified B-Corp consultancy offering custom-made solutions for responsible business practices.
You can use MGIMM to self-assess how well your factory is performing against the industry and take necessary corrective actions. MGIMM is not an audit but rather a tool to help the garment factories in Myanmar improve their social performance through self-assessments and workers' surveys.
2. How does MGIMM differ from other major social performance monitoring initiatives for the Myanmar garment industry?
MGIMM is a monitoring mechanism independent of other initiatives that are used to monitor social compliance in the Myanmar garment industry, such as Sequa’s transparency assessment scorecard for Multistakeholder Alliance for Decent Employment in Myanmar (
. MGIMM aims to assess 200 garment factories in Myanmar regardless of the association or social compliance initiative they take.
However, MGIMM aligns with Myanmar labour law requirements, ILO standards, and other compliance initiatives, such as MADE and VLCA. Key stakeholders such as MADE, MGMA, industry experts, and labour rights organisations were also consulted during the development process.
MGIMM enables your factory to:
Assess and benchmark your factory’s performance against the industry.
Identify and address working conditions and fair treatment issues that can improve worker morale and productivity.
Address potential problems before they escalate to help mitigate risks, such as legal penalties and negative publicity.
The assessment scope includes all garment factories registered and operating in Myanmar. If more than one garment factory operates under a registered legal entity, the assessment should be for each factory. For example, if ‘Factory A’ and ‘Factory B’ are garment factories in Myanmar registered under the legal ownership ‘XYZ Company’, both ‘Factory A’ and ‘Factory B’ are encouraged to take the assessment, but separately to assess the social performance appropriately at the factory level. The assessment scope also includes all factory employees, including security guards and janitors contracted by agencies.
3. What are the key components of MGIMM?
There are two key components in MGIMM: Scorecard and Worker Survey.
3.1. Scorecard
The scorecard has three parts, and each part is detailed below:
3.1.1. Factory Profile
You will provide general information about the factory being assessed, including its shareholders, management, workers' demographics, etc.
3.1.2. Assessment Questions
You will answer 97 assessment questions covering 12 sub-topics: Employment, Forced labour, Child Labour, Working hours, Remuneration, Non-discrimination, Violence and harassment, Disciplinary measures, Safety and Welfare, FOA and dialogue, Grievances, and Employment Termination.
3.1.3. Monthly Tracker
You will provide monthly numerical information on the following:
You are encouraged to share the online ‘Worker Survey’ with your factory workers so they can answer the survey independently. The survey aims to understand workers’ perceptions of the factory’s social performance. The survey will ensure whether the factory social performance systems are effective and identify any gap between the system and workers’ views towards the system. This will allow you to mitigate the risks of non-compliance.
4. How will the answers be assessed?
You will answer the scorecard online, and a team of qualified assessors will review and score your answer based on the supporting evidence you provided.
5. What kind of documents do you need to collect/ prepare before answering the questions?
You will need to collect these documents in digital format: policies, documents explaining the procedures, and training records (where relevant) for these topics:
Employment
Forced Labour
Child Labour
Working hours
Remuneration
Non-discrimination

for details of the question and supporting document.
These documents must be uploaded to the MGIMM online platform for the respective questions.
6. What kind of device is needed to complete the assessment?
It is highly recommended to complete the MGIMM assessment using a desktop computer or laptop with an internet connectivity as you will require to collect and upload several documents.
7. What about the data confidentiality?
Only Yever team members and the service providers contracted by Yever will have access to the information uploaded and will use it for assessment purposes only. The information uploaded will not be shared with other factories or associations. Yever ensures data security with encrypted drives, 2-factor Authentication, and restricted access. Project data will be hosted in the EU and are fully compliant with GDPR.
8. How will the result be shared?
The results will be shared online. After all the factory results are reviewed and assessed and the data are consolidated, you will receive an email from Yever with a link to view the results online.
