India's vast geography and uneven distribution of healthcare resources create significant access challenges. With a population of over 1.4 billion, and a doctor-patient ratio of 1:1446 (ICMR), the country grapples with a severe shortage of healthcare resources. With over 700 million smartphone users, including 425 million in rural areas (WEF data), India has a vast user base that can benefit from smartphone-based AI applications to address the access gap:
Telemedicine powered by AI can bring expert medical care to remote areas, reducing the need for physical infrastructure. AI-based mobile solutions further scale this reach without incremental costs. Chatbots and virtual health assistants, for instance, can provide 24/7 basic health information and triage, reducing the burden on healthcare facilities.

Daily commuting hassles, difficulty in accessing office buildings or educational institutions, toilets; difficulty in understanding and lack of accessibility in communication to engage effectively, or a lack of study materials in Braille and lack of captioned videos or lack of real-time captioning and interpretation services in classrooms, public establishments, and events – these are all reasons for people with disabilities opting out of opportunities that should be equally available to them.

They often constitute an invisible community in India, pushed to the sidelines due to a lack of understanding of accessibility needs across diverse spectrums within these communities.

⭐️ AI for early intervention in language learning and reasoning capability development


For building skills, learning by communicating with others, functioning in society and leading a healthy life language learning and reasoning capability should be developed from an early age. In Indian families, especially underprivileged families the language learning and reasoning capability development of kids with disabilities like deafness and neurodiverse disabilities is delayed.

There are 78.64 lakh children with disabilities in India. The school dropout rate for children with disabilities is as high as 12 per cent. As many as 27 per cent have never been enrolled in any educational institution.

Why? Lack of accessible school buildings, lack of accessible learning materials, lack of training for faculties to learn how to teach and help disabled kids.

Buildings are not constructed in a disabled-friendly manner. For instance, there are instances where ramps are absent, and easily accessible toilets for the disabled are lacking. Navigating inside the building is generally challenging for blind individuals. Also Many public establishments such as airports, banks, railway stations and hospitals lack tools to assist the deaf and hard of hearing.

Additionally, many software and tools used in the workplace are not accessible to people with various disabilities, including motor disabilities and blindness.

Copilots and code generation models are already helping disabled coders with motor disabilities, blindness,...etc to code. In a similar way AI can be used to make other tools accessible to the blind, deaf and people having motor disabilities across different job profiles, roles and environments.

Potential bottlenecks


Getting good datasets, especially in the Indian context, is the need of the hour to provide culturally relevant interventions in health and accessibility
Computer vision (image and video related AI solutions) require higher volumes of data storage and might be costly.
India's linguistic diversity poses a significant challenge in developing AI solutions that can effectively communicate across multiple languages and dialects.
Gender disparity between men and women’s usage of smartphones (only 29% of women use smartphones compared to 71% of men (NSSO data)).
Right now (unfortunately) people who are facing various disabilities and some of the organizations working on empowering them are the people who understand what all are the problems faced by people with disabilities in India.
Accessibility products and capabilities that need only minimal processing power and that work without the internet is required.
