We help Jews (of all stripes) become financially self-sufficient.
HOW WE’RE DIFFERENT
Our unique “selling” proposition
So many organizations exist to help Jews with money matters. But writing a check is the easy way out.
We’re different because we:
Look at the long-term
We measure success in confidence — not dollars and cents. Our every move is guided by the long-term goal of giving a person self-sufficiency.
Offer turnkey solutions
Because we look at the long-term, we help people with varying money-related issues, from job placement to financial literacy to startup consulting. We also partner with other organizations to give our people what they need.
WHY WE EXIST
THE PROBLEM
Every Jew deserves to be financially self-sufficient. There are too many Jews who struggle with financial security — in too many ways:
The 46 year old father of 5 who just got laid off.
The couple who make $200k a year and still can’t figure out how to pay their bills.
The college grad who struggles to find a job.
No one knows how long the current financial crisis or the economic recession will last. We do know that it is taking a terrible toll. People are losing their jobs, their savings, and in some cases, their homes. Now is the time for us to act as a community. We can all help in some way, sharing our skills or offering financial assistance to those in need. Best of all, we can help them find work and an income and a recovered sense of dignity.
Writing a check…is the easy way out. We need to help these people for REAL.
OUR SOLUTION
To create an all-encompassing organization that helps Jews become financially self-sufficient in the way THEY need. What’s on our drawing board:
Community-based job board with volunteer job “matchmakers” who help each individual find the job they need, and guide them through the process of creating a resume, applying, & getting interviewed.
Financial literacy courses
Investment help
Consulting & coaching for startups
Vocational skill training (for example: coding bootcamp)
Monthly meetups and networking events
OUR VISION
Jewish law is intensely aware that needing help from others is not only a financial crisis, it is also psychologically traumatic. To lose your job is a blow to self-respect, an essential element of human dignity. So Judaism tells us that, wherever possible, we must try to minimize the embarrassment or shame.
Therefore, the highest form of tzedakah is one 'who provides someone with a gift or a loan or a business partnership or in some other way helps him find employment.'
Of all forms of assistance it is the one that most effectively gives someone back their independence, dignity and self-respect. The best aid, says Maimonides, is to help someone no longer need your help.
Work means independence. It’s at the core of human dignity.
That’s why we envision a world…
Where every Jewish community has a network and system in place to respectably help those who are struggling financially.
Where every individual within the community joins us to share their skills, knowledge, and job openings with their fellow Jews.
Where writing checks becomes less important, and giving someone independence becomes the focus.
Where every man and woman can provide for their family confidently and worry-free.
Vision:
Be able to help all Jews find better opportunities to self sustain themselves.
KEY PROVISIONS
Focus on the individual - Our mission is to help each individual succeed
Focus on the community second - If an individual wants to look outside the city for an opportunity, he should be helped
Observance level is not important - The mission is to help every Jew, not matter their level of observance. In fact, connecting secular Jews to observant Jews should promoted as a key way to encourage Unity
Privacy - A key ingredient will be the organizations and volunteers adherence to privacy. There will be extremely private matters such as someone that wants to leave a job working for a prominent member of the community etc...
Partnerships w other organizations - we should work with other organizations (community loan funds, Gemach’s, Federation, etc...) to both source individuals to help but more importantly to direct people who come to us for other help we can’t provide
We don’t hand out money
Its ultimately the individual’s choice - Our job is to help them make more money, but sometimes money is not everything. Time, a good work environment and most importantly an opportunity for growth should be a part of the equation and our job is to lay out the facts
We do not poach nor do we commend poaching. We do not reveal other companies salaries to anyone else, but we could make recommendations to companies expectations.
Employee vs Partner or owner - Our job is to help everyone succeed in their own parnassah and many times that is not through a traditional job.
