Role (Persona)
Define who the AI should emulate or what perspective to take. Helps anchor tone and domain expertise.
“You are a usability researcher…” / “Act as a UX writing assistant…” Prompt example: “Act as a UX researcher reviewing a mobile app. Provide an honest usability audit in layman’s terms.”
Keep roles relevant to the task. Overly fictional roles may mislead the model.
Context
Provide background details or specifics about the situation so responses are relevant.
“Considering Gen Z shopping habits…” “Based on the following user feedback [paste excerpt]…” Example: “You are a UX writer for an e-commerce site. Context: The site caters to first-time online shoppers.”
Always ask: What does the AI need to know about the who/what/where of this task?
Task
Clearly state what you want the AI to do. This is the instruction at the core of the prompt.
“List 5 improvements to the onboarding flow and explain why each would help retention.” ❌ Too vague: “Improve our app.” ✅ Better: “Suggest improvements to the sign-up screen to reduce drop-offs.”
Be explicit and specific; break large goals into smaller, actionable tasks.
Constraints & Guidance
Specify format, tone, scope, or rules for the answer. This keeps responses focused and usable.
“Answer in 3–4 bullet points.” “Use a friendly, informal tone.” “Only reference data from the provided notes.” UX-specific: “Give the answer as a numbered list of steps.”
Prevents overly verbose or off-target results. Output becomes easier to scan and apply.
Expected Output Format
Define the exact structure you expect: summary, list, table, JSON, etc.
“Summarize the interview findings as a bulleted report with a brief intro sentence.” “Provide the output in JSON format.” UX-specific: “Generate 3 user story prompts, each in the format: ‘As a [user], I want [need] so that [insight].’”
Reduces ambiguity and ensures immediately usable, structured results.
