1.3 Data Collection

💽 Initiating data collection

Each firm should review the data requirements and data collection template (as per the sections below) and consider the following prior to collecting data:

Identify the responsible individuals internally and agree on the data collection process with external support (See Setting up the team)

The depth and breadth of data that will have to be collected (See Defining the Boundary), including understanding the availability and quality of data, and where new systems have to be put in place to obtain the necessary information.

Need for information sharing and training for the people (data collectors) involved in collecting the data

What third parties may need to be involved (landlords etc) and the time needed to obtain data from external sources

If the necessary data sharing processes and permissions are in place

📑 Data quality guidance

The quality of data is important to the overall carbon reporting process. Generally, actual data is preferable to estimated data, and complete data is preferable to partial data. However, primary data will not always be available in the first year of carbon footprinting.

Your firm should strive to collect the highest level of quality data available and work on improving this year on year.

📄 Data Requirements document

The data collection requirements for each emissions category are detailed within the Data Requirements Document. This document provides a summary of data requirements for all emissions categories as well as who is most likely to be responsible for collecting this data.

For each emissions category, the document indicates what data is needed at primary, secondary and tertiary data quality level, as well as general requirements.

You can filter this list by emissions category or who is responsible for data collection by functional area (finance, IT, travel, procurement) to find the data you are responsible for.

Please note the decks have been produced by the Global Office in partnership with Accenture; the date storage referenced towards the end of each deck is only relevant for the firms working with Accenture on their carbon footprint project.

The data collection templates provided here is a comprehensive example that includes all of the emissions categories and explanation of data required for each category.

If you are using a different external carbon accounting service provider to Accenture, their templates may be slightly different.
