You need to identify suitable colleagues from within your firm to assist in the project as required and ensure that they have sufficient time to complete project tasks. To calculate a carbon footprint a wide range of data across a number of data categories is required. These include but are not limited to energy bills, the purchase ledger, facilities management data, exports from business travel software, etc. It is a complicated process to collect and analyse data, and it requires strong project management skills as well as individuals from across the firm to participate and contribute.

🏢 External carbon accounting support - MSA with Accenture

Especially in the first year of data collection it is strongly recommended that the firms employ external carbon accounting and analytics support to help them deal with the complexity of data collection and data processing, and in order to ensure consistency in the approach to carbon footpriting that is aligned with the global Net-Zero commitment.

The Global Office has worked in partnership with Accenture to pilot carbon data projects and to develop the global methodology for Net-Zero, and has put in place a Master Service Agreement (MSA) with Accenture for a streamlined engagement with their experts in carbon accounting. Via the MSA you will have an option to engage Accenture in a complete project including kick-off presentations, training workshops, drop-in sessions, results discussion and hot spot analysis. If working with Accenture, you should be prepared to provide the data required for Accenture to calculate the carbon footprint.

Your firm must ensure that it has the systems in place for gathering, systemising and processing of data. If you are working with a 3rd party carbon accounting team like Accenture to calculate your carbon footprint, they are likely to have a GHG emission conversion software that you may be able to use. Those firms who contract with Accenture will have access to their carbon reporting tool, Accuity.

For firms looking to invest in a system to cater to their carbon footprint calculations and ESG reporting, the Global Sustainability and IT teams are leading the process to recommend technology platforms in mid-to-late 2023.
