Mike Monday is:
Dad of 4 young boys and husband of an incredible woman
musician, producer and performer since 1994
a coach of musicians at every level of skill success and experience since 2012
the founder of Make Music Your Life, a music coaching company
creator of the Music Machine, a system which solves many of the problems which strangle creative freedom
Since starting his musical journey with piano lessons at age 7, he quickly started learning other instruments (bassoon, sax, voice). He won the first ever Ernst & Young prize in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain where he played bassoon and contra bassoon.
After getting a music degree from The Queen’s College, Oxford where he was a choral scholar, then moved to London to pursue a musical career.
His first release - Beat Foundation “Foundations” in 1994 was a collaboration with Andy Cato (Groove Armada). This got the attention of Radio 1 and the Virgin Records A&R dance department (who were flush with their recent Daft Punk success.)
Beat Foundation’s next release “Save Me” was one of 4 tracks on Sashas mix on the first ever Essential Collection. This was one of the first ever DJ compilations.
When Andy left the project to focus on Groove Armada Mike had a major creative crisis for 2 years. He didn’t complete anything of his own, simply engineering, producing and writing for and with others (including Darren Emerson of Underworld fame).
He didn’t know it then, but this crisis was the seed for what he now does.
He realised that despite all the music training he’d got over the preceding 18 years, no one had taught him how to finish quality music consistently.
Knowing how the gear, software and instruments work is important. As is understanding the theory and techniques of composition and production. But they are useless without knowing how your “music master tool” works (your mind). Or understanding the approach, strategy and tactics which allow you to work with your psychology.
It is now Mike’s mission to help every musician, music producer and artist who struggles to make music understand that this is not their fault. It is the modern music composition and production process that works against the human mind. And to make sure that these skills are embedded within EVERY music course and training.
(Because the fact they’re not taught anywhere else is bordering on unethical.)
He’s doing this through teaching the Music Machine system (which is a process for making music which works WITH your psychology), and this podcast.
By hearing how artists make music, and delving deep into their process we can gain more clarity and insight into what creates beautiful music.
