Northeast Performing Arts Alliance: Profit-Sharing Production Series

Fractured atlas submission doc

Statements of purpose

Starting from a belief that musical values should shape our markets rather than market values shaping our music, LOOVE LLC is devoted to providing practical and inspiring business frameworks towards a more integral, dynamic and empowering ecosystem for artists, institutions and audiences.
LOOVE supports the creation of experiences, agreements and transactions in the music and media environment that inspire mutual trust and reciprocity within our local and virtual communities.

Operations

The org’s activites include local projects and broader policy initiatives. On a local level, we’re focused on the following:
Providing grants and commissions for creative artists and collectives throughout New York and the Tri-State region,
Facilitating new work as needed as an engaged and equitable production, promotion and distribution partner;
Promoting the practice of transparency and profitsharing in our re-imagined retail operation.
On a broader level, we’re also engaged in the following areas of policy and service
Generating a common declaration of standards for the commercial and social distribution, presentation and production of digital arts and media
forming a progressive open-source toolkit for media-related agreements- built upon those principles, and inspired by coalitions working in law, the arts, and labor.

Project Description

Audience members are critical to a healthy environment for the arts- not just through the support and engagement they contribute, but as part of the holistic, energetic exchange built into most forms of artistic expression. Loove’s Profit-Sharing Series aims to reframe the relationship between artists, producers and consumers into something broader and more sustainable, using the natural circulation between these participants to model the way other forms of economic exchange might evolve in our society.
The Loove Profit-Sharing Series seeks to extend some of the core tenets of collaboration that are found among creative ensembles - for example, the principles of harmony, the capacity to dynamically refactor ones’ role and perspective in real-time; the ability to develop consensus among collaborators without hindering development- and to highlight those principles throughout the lifecycle of each new project. The result should funding, presenting, performing and producing improvised music as a beacon or template for other critical processes we encounter in larger groups of society
We propose a ten-part series of artistic presentations with an allocated budget of $40,000 for fixed expenses through the first quarter of 2024. Each session will offer a platform for an ensemble to perform and present improvised new music, serving as a testament to the creative process in a significant cultural market. All revenues- ticket sales, sales and downloads of media, dedicated donations- will be split 50/50 between the artist and Loove Labs.
Each presentation will result in a professional multimedia recording, to be released in cooperation with the artist. We hope that putting this together in an intimate setting in front of an audience will highlight the fact that they are both witnesses to, and active participants in the evolution of new work, rather than consumers. In addition, our policy of total transparency will emphasize how profoundly intrinsic their support is to the act of creation. Listener engagement is more than a passive consumption of the final product; it involves the audience in the unfolding narrative of artistic creation, demonstrating how disciplined collaboration can lead to innovative outcomes. This approach presents a model for how we might tackle complex societal challenges - not through isolation, but through active, creative engagement with one another.
In this manner, we seek to emphasize the value of artistic expression as a means to societal advancement, and affirm our commitment to equity, transparency, and the vibrancy of artistic creations.

Public Benefit of Project

Our mission is to develop a more sustainable ecosystem for the arts- one that is responsive to the challenges and opportunities of our contemporary digital landscape. Through a commitment to equitable profit sharing (50/50 split, transparency regarding expenses), Loove Labs endeavors to fortify the bond between artists and their audience, ensuring that the production and experience of creative music are supported in a more active way.
By putting together a series featuring a diverse and multigenerational assembly of committed, inventive, and forward thinking artists such as Craig Taborn, Helen Sung, Ayumi Ishito, Tyshawn Sorey, and Peter Apfelbaum, we hope to demonstrate how this model will help music and art continue to stretch boundaries, thrive, and encompass new conceptions.
Art, ultimately, doesn't just reflect our world—it shapes it. By providing a platform for bold, forward-thinking artists, the Loove Labs Profit-Sharing Production Series seeks to contribute to this transformative power of art, nurturing dialogue, empathy, and progress amidst our challenging times.

Summary of Qualifications

Loove LLC is founded around a vision of equity, sustainability, and radical transparency. We believe artistic values can shape the market, rather than market values shaping the arts. As part of the broader cultural and commercial fellowship, we are striving to demonstrate an improved framework for all the participants in the creative process. Artists, audiences, producers, engineers, technical crew; they all come together in the service of something communal, sacred, and sublime.
Loove Labs has provided production services for a wide array of artists, including D’Angelo, Dave Douglas, John Tchicai, David Torn, Iggy Pop, Gregory Porter, along with institutional partners like the School for Improvisational Music, the Vision Festival, and SFJAZZ. In addition we've curated and presented live video concerts with artists ranging from Ben Monder to Gary Bartz to SKERIK.
As part of our larger mission, we are trying to redefine all aspects of artistic commerce, from retail, to distribution and performance.
Officers and Founders: Before co-founding Loove LLC, Srinija Srinivasan was the fifth employee and longtime editor in chief at Yahoo, where she guided the development of editorial standards and policy from inception in the web’s early days to global reach in the industry’s rapid expansion. In addition to being a mission driver and co-founder of Loove LLC, she's a Vice Chair of Stanford University’s Board of Trustees, a board member of The On Being Project, and former board chair of SFJAZZ.
A world renowned recording artist, composer, studio musician, clinician, instructor, producer, engineer, and entrepreneur, Josh Roseman is the co-founder, director, curator, engineer and technical lead for Loove LLC, and its studio subsidiary, 58N6 Media Labs. In addition to his work at Loove Labs, he has released three albums as a leader, and appeared on over 120 albums as a sideman. As a composer, his work has been commissioned SFJAZZ, The Jazz Gallery, La Scala in Milan, Switzerland’s Downtown Geneva Orchestra, and Australia’s Wangaratta Jazz festival.

Prospective Sources of Funding
You can answer this question as broadly as you'd like, including individual donors, specific grant opportunities, potential corporate sponsors, etc.
Project Title or Company Name
Remember, the term "project" is used very broadly and may refer to either a one-time project, an ongoing project, group, or company, or even the work and career of an individual artist.
Temporary or Ongoing
We ask you to let us know if the timeline of your work is limited or if you're planning to fundraise for your ongoing work. Don't worry, your fiscal sponsorship won't end if your project activities continue beyond the date you originally entered as the project's end date in your application.
Project Discipline
We are a non-curatorial fiscal sponsor, so your discipline does not affect your application status. We are also geeky, and like to share among our membership what disciplines everyone is working in.
Project Description
This is important! Our Board will review this more closely than any other part of the application.
For temporary sponsorship, you would describe a single project.
For ongoing sponsorship, give a general description of the kind of work you create or various projects you plan to produce.
Public Benefit of Project
By law, activities are only charitable if they provide some benefit to the public. Please let us know who will interact with or experience your work.
Summary of Artist Qualifications/Group HistoryOnline Profile Text and Website Link
All sponsored projects will be set up with a public profile on our website - this should be a general description of you as an artist or of your group. You will be able to update this section at your discretion throughout your sponsorship.
Short Tagline
A tagline is a brief, one-line description of your fiscally sponsored project. It is limited to 100 characters and will appear under your project title on your project’s public profile. You could also think of it as a catchy subtitle for your project.
Profile Description
This will display on your public fundraising Profile and is editable.
An image or video to include in your online profile.
Your Facebook and/or Twitter links, if you have them
Project Location
Do you have, or will you solicit, investors who are not also creative participants in the project?
An investor is someone who will own a share of the work and expect a financial return on the money they give. A donor is someone who gives with no expectation of receiving anything in return for the money they give.
Do you plan to have any lobbying or advocacy activities?
Do you currently or have you ever had your 501(c)(3) status?
Do you plan to disburse funds overseas?
