I NEED A LOCKER FOR MY INSTRUMENT.
Fill out a music locker request form for a locker assignment. At the beginning of each semester, there will be designated times to check out lockers. The OIM will assign a suitably-sized locker and provide you with the combination to the lock. Do not share this combination with anyone.
WHAT GOES IN MY LOCKER?
Your instrument and your music. Mutes or other Instrument equipment, of course, may be stored in the locker as well, but only if space allows.
WHAT DOESN’T GO IN MY LOCKER?
Trash and food left overnight. If any student’s locker contains trash or food particles, it will be cleaned and a $5 cleaning fee will be assessed. Students will have one week to pay this fine, or it will double.
IS IT ‘MY’ LOCKER?
No, it isn’t your private property. You are granted access to a university-owned locker, and authorized university workers (including designated student workers) may access the locker at any time.
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF STUDENTS WITH ASSIGNED LOCKERS?
Lockers must be kept clean. Assigned combination locks must secure the locker door when the instrument is in the locker. To avoid loss of university resources (including locks), please keep locks locked at all times. Locks that are noticed to be unlocked should be latched by whoever notices. Fine for lost lock will be $10.
I NEED TO ACCESS A UNIVERSITY INSTRUMENT.
Fill out an instrument check-out form and explain what is needed and for how long. The OIM will provide a locker # and lock combination. Do not share the lock combination with anyone. When you no longer need the instrument or your agreed borrowing time is expired, contact the OIM and the OIM will remove your assignment (and might change the locks, as warranted).
WHAT IS REQUIRED OF STUDENTS USING UNIVERSITY INSTRUMENTS?
Keep the instrument sanitary. No food within 10 minutes of starting to play. Keep the instrument clean and polished. Do not operate the instrument in any way that may cause permanent damage, such as forcing non-oiled valves to play instead of taking time to oil them and keep them lubricated, or bending keys to get them to seal. Daily care and cleaning will mitigate most repairs. Keep the instrument protected in a case as much as possible. This includes during breaks from playing. Do not leave the instrument unattended on chairs or stands at any time. Chairs and stands are often moved between ensembles, increasing the likelihood of catastrophic damage to your instrument. Also, keep the case latched - only latching one or two latches will damage the case over time and endanger the instrument. Contact OIM if any maintenance is needed; but make every effort to fix small issues yourself. (No excessive force required, or DIY projects. If something is not working as well as it did and you have questions on how to fix it, report to the OIM). CUI takes pride in its instrument inventory, and invests significant funds in keeping them in good working order. Repair costs due to student negligence will be charged to their university account. Provide your own reeds. In many cases, brass players should provide their own mouthpiece. Students are expected to own and regularly use maintenance items for your specific instrument- such as valve oil, slide grease (be sure to wipe off old oil and grease before adding more), polishing/cleaning cloth(s), swabs, etc. Keep the instrument in its designated locker when not in use. When your assignment period is completed, the instrument is subject to inspection to ensure that the items above were adhered to. Any violation of the above will result in a fine ranging from $2 up to the cost of repair.
