GetBikery is a concept that stems from the wider sustainability considerations of Lewes District Council (LDC). Matthew Bird, previous lead member for sustainability, has championed this venture and brought it into operation in 2022.
The coordination includes:
A successful funding bid from LDC, in partnership with Ovesco.
The planning and collaboration with Human Nature to see a GetBikery base at the Phoenix site in North Street.
The formation of a project team, Laura, Sam, James and Matt, to develop the strategic and operational logistics of bringing a viable and sustainable enterprise into action.
Why is this service so necessary?
Lewes is an ideal environment for an e-cargo bike service to operate. Its topography lends and somewhat necessitates the need for mechanical input and until now this has only been considered as a combustion engine. The center of Lewes therefore has a high degree of pollution from cars, vans and buses.
Getbikery has three main operative functions:
Hire: The 12 bikes can be hired out by local organisations and individuals to use for day to day operations. To hire the bikes, the organisation or individual will need to become a member of the Getbikery club! Membership denotes a commitment to use and to care for the service. As a regenerative service; supporting the regeneration of the environment by reducing overall emissions, members recognise that this service is working to transform our communities for the better, reducing the need and reliance upon cars and reducing unnecessary consumption of goods, through our cooperative values.
Delivery: GetBikery bikes will be used by organisaitons to delivery good to the local community. Organisaitons are invited to sponsor a bike through their membership, again denoting their commitment to see this regenerative service flourish!
Community: Community groups will be able to hire these bikes as ad hoc use. There will be a number of opportunities yet to be realised and we invite the community to come up with some great ways to use GetBikery. From Stoolball tours to kids adventure parties, the mind just keeps creating new ventures for these bikes to be part of.
Where are we now?
GetBikery is in operation, and moving from strength to strength. Its home in Lewes has been fitted out to keep the bikes snug in their downtime, the team has been working hard behind the scenes, arranging for trackers and insurance, security locks and mapping systems, websites and booking functions, promotional materials and graphic designs, bespoke crafted carriers and really cool other stuff!
How are we moving forwards?
So we now have some operational decisions to make and we feel that we are ready to ask the community to express an initial commitment for use, with our GetBikery membership. The concept of the membership is simple, services do not flourish if they are prescribed to a community but rather this has emerged from a need and will embed within the local culture if the community becomes part of the project. Being a member of GetBikery is a statement of commitment to change, a recognition that the old structures of day to day logistics are broken and need transforming, regenerating to meet the future requirement for adaptation and mitigation.
Everyone can be involved in this transformation! Through a simple commitment of use; ad-hoc, low, medium or high. We hope that all users of the service will see the benefits of membership straight away and we hope that you can help us to track those benefits, because each and every use will have its own reason, from reducing car use, to demonstrating an agile and affordable delivery service. Whatever the reason for use, we would like to hear your story and understand how to support you to achieve your aims through the GetBikery membership.
To become a member you will simply need to complete:
Our membership is bespoke so that we can be completely inclusive. We will want to speak to you about your usage and create a package that is tailored, affordable and sustainable.
Part of your membership will include an agreement of use, this is a stipulation of our insurance policy. Using these bikes is simple, they are fun to ride and easy to get long with. This agreement enables you to feel safe and comfortable using, locking and looking after the bike while it is in your care. It is a bit like a hire policy, but we aim to ensure that it doesn’t scare you, it simply invites you to use GetBikery more easily!
