The climate crisis is already here. Extreme temperatures, droughts, floods, and storms are killing people. Animals are going extinct.
And when global warming reaches an average increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius, that’s right around enough to push many of the Earth’s natural systems past a dangerous tipping point. Going above 1.5 degrees means:
1.7 billion more people subjected to severe heatwaves
Several hundred million more people exposed to climate-related risks and poverty
Coral reefs that entire ecosystems rely on wiped out
And much more.
When we talk about 1.5 degrees of global warming, we mean average temperature increase. Some places are increasing much faster than others, and some places have already crossed this line.
Because of all the greenhouse gases that humans have already put in the atmosphere, average temperatures will keep rising. However, that alone is unlikely to push us to 1.5 degrees of global warming, and we still have a chance to keep warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius.
