Background info

The Peruvian jungle is home to more than 300,000 indigenous people, but 72% of the populations in these communities have no way to demonstrate their property rights. Many of the murders of defenders and indigenous people arise from conflicts over land ownership and use, especially due to the expansion of mining and illegal logging. Attacks against indigenous human rights defenders have shown an alarming increase in the last 3 years (marginalization and discrimination by the authorities), many of these acts go unreported, language barriers, lack of media coverage
April 2019: Cristian Java Rios was killed in an ambush organized by gangs to sabotage pipelines that transport oil through the region.
