Indigenous Kuy

Background info

The indigenous peoples who live in the Prey Lang forest area mostly identify as Indigenous Kuy. The Prey Lang forest is a protected wildlife area - designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 2016. The forest spans over 4 provinces in Cambodia.
The forest is a protected wildlife zone and is at risk from illegal logging. It is one of Southeast Asia’s most important ecosystems and it is under threat.
The Prey Lang Community Network reported 41,758 hectares of forest loss 2001-18 (10% of sanctuary).
The companies murder environmental defenders so they can financially exploit the natural resources in the forest. 3 defenders murdered by government armed forces who backed the illegal timber cutting.
In March 2020 - Prey Lang’s defenders have been threatened, arrested and attacked. 4 forest defenders have been arrested and questioned by court in April 2020 for ‘plundering resources’ from the area and ‘trespassing’. With regards with pollution South Korean-owned company Think Biotech made the allegations ー when the activists had been released from police custody they said they were beaten by the company’s private security guards in Kratie province.
The UN initiative REDD+ made a monitoring map for roads in Cambodia to prevent logging in the forest. Timber exports from the forest are banned now.
