Background info

The struggle carried out by the Mayan indigenous people in Belize is historical since it was part of a bloody conflict between the Spanish conquerors who dominated Guatemala and the British colonizers who took what is now Belize. There are even Afro-indigenous groups from various parts of the country suing US transnational companies that seek to extract oil from their communities.
