Repeal the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act

Hello,

The Critical Infrastructure Defence Act is a bill set to become law on Friday, June 5th by Premier Jason Kenney of the Alberta government. This bill would limit the rights of protestors to gather and hold the government accountable on “essential infrastructure,” which can include roads, sidewalks, railways, pipelines, etc. The bill could also unjustly prosecute Indigenous people for hunting or gathering on traditional territory. In the time of the Wet’suwet’en protests and the Black Lives Matter movement, this bill is of critical importance.

Fridays for Future Toronto has noted that your administration has yet to provide this issue with the amount of coverage it deserves. We are writing to express our concern over the issue and inquire as to why this is the case. If you have not done so already, we strongly urge you to fully investigate this issue and provide accurate and complete coverage of its developments.

If you fail to do so, Fridays for Future Toronto will have to inform our supporters that you, as members of the media, contributed to this violation of individual rights. While we would much rather work with your organization in covering this matter, all parties contributing to the problem will be mentioned.

We would also like to mention that Premier Kenney is currently blocking youth activists and opponents of the Critical Infrastructure Defence Act from expressing their discontent on his Instagram account. Further, in the past 15 hours, over 1400 people have signed a petition for the Premier to withdraw his bill - we are not alone in this fight.

Thank you for your time,
